The Tooth Fairy…For Dogs??

I was getting Ashley and Derek out of the bath, and Troy and Jason were brushing their teeth. Ashley gets done and wanders out into the hallway. All of a sudden, Troy says, “Ma! Ma! Ashley lost a tooth!” Now, Ash is only 19 months old. She should not be losing a tooth right now, so my Mommy hairs on the back of my neck went up, and I tried not to panic.

Me: What do you mean, Ashley lost a tooth??” What makes you think that?
Troy: Here! She had this in her mouth!

This is the tooth Troy handed me. Apparently it belongs to Echo.

He hands me a tooth. At first I freaked out, but then I realized that the tooth in my hand was not a human tooth, but a puppy tooth. I instantly started to relax, and I smiled. I informed the kiddos that this tooth was not from Ashley, but from a pup. I purposely pushed the thought of my daughter having that in her mouth aside, and just brushed her teeth…twice. The boys all went and found the dogs, and decided that it was Echo that had lost his tooth. I am not really sure what caused them to draw that conclusion, but I went with it. Then Jason started looking really sad, so I asked him what was wrong.

Jason: Mama.  Echo doesn’t have a pillow to put his tooth under! The Tooth Fairy won’t come if he doesn’t have a pillow!
Me: I just stood there stunned, not really sure what to say…kid logic sometimes can stop me in my tracks.

Troy:  I know!  He can use one of ours!  That will work!

(Troy is my Hero.)

Jason:  Great idea, Troy!

This is how Jason and Troy set up the pups’ kennel to prepare for the Tooth Fairy.

And off they went to get a pillow.  Apparently puppies can use their pillow, but their pillowcase is off limits.  I am not sure why, but it works for me!  Then they prepared Echo’s bed with a pillow and blanket and set up the Boppy with a blanket in the middle to hold the treats the Tooth Fairy is going to bring.  Then they put the tooth into an envelope and labeled it.  Jason labored over this task for a good 6-7 minutes.  He then made sure that Sierra was going to get a treat too, because he didn’t want her to feel bad.  Of course I let him know that the Tooth Fairy always thinks about the other dogs and brings them a small treat so they don’t feel left out.  That made him very happy.

Troy asked me if he Tooth Fairy had to take the tooth away with her.  Sensing that my always curious kiddo wanted to keep the tooth and save it, I told him that I could ask her to let us keep it.  I then pretended to text the Tooth Fairy, and informed Troy that the tooth can stay with us.  She is perfectly fine with that.  Troy was thrilled.  He started to plot how he was going to be able to catch her giving Echo his treats.  I told him that the Tooth Fairy won’t come if he is awake, so he finally decided he would go to sleep, but wake up several times in the night and check on her.  He is just sure he will see her if he wakes up and she doesn’t hear him.

This is the envelope Jason labored over so the Tooth Fairy knew where to find the tooth.

Sure buddy.  Good luck with that.

They then went to bed.  Hmmmmm….I guess I am the Tooth Fairy tonight.  I started to go in and just place treats under the pillow, but Echo was on me like stink on poop!  He could smell those treats three rooms away.  I wanted them to be there when the boys got up so they could let Echo know about it and feed him the treats themselves.  It WAS their idea…I will let the pups sleep with me.  I will lock them into the room and then place the treats under the pillow.  I will then let the pups out in the morning until the kiddos get up.  They can then go get the pups and show him the treats.

I thought it was really sweet that the kids were so worried about Echo getting a visit from the Tooth Fairy.  The bond between kids and dogs is such a strong one!  Now if you will excuse me, I must don my wings now…

The treats the Tooth Fairy left for Echo and Sierra. She is a great Fairy, isn’t she?
